<p>At the start of the series, Sakura has a deep infatuation for Sasuke Uchiha, rooted primarily in his good looks, cool attitude, and prodigious talents. Because of this, many of Sakura&#8217;s early appearances are dedicated to her continuing effort to win his affection.<span> </span><span> </span> As the story progresses and she begins to spend more time with Sasuke as a teammate, Sakura develops a concern that Sasuke will someday abandon her and the rest of Konohagakure in his quest for power.<span> </span><span> </span> When her fears come true at the end of Part I, Sakura does all that she can to stop Sasuke from leaving, such as professing her love for him and offering to join him. Though touched by her words, they do not stop Sasuke from defecting from Konoha.<span id="more-58"></span><span> </span> Since then, Sakura has made it her personal goal to bring Sasuke home, which becomes a recurring component of her role in Part II.<span> </span> Although she still worries about his well-being and doesn&#8217;t allow others to insult Sasuke, Sakura is willing to attack him if it means returning him to Konoha.<span> </span></p>
<p>Sakura&#8217;s relationship with Naruto Uzumaki, like with Sasuke, also changes throughout the series. When first teamed up together, Sakura views Naruto as a talentless idiot who deliberately tries to ruin her life. As the story progresses and Naruto continually shows his worth as a ninja as well as his dedication to his teammates, Sakura realizes that her initial perceptions of him were wrong. After Sasuke defects from Konoha at the end of Part I, Sakura pleads for Naruto to bring him back. Having a crush on Sakura, Naruto does all in his power to return Sasuke to her. Although he fails and is left in the hospital afterwards, he vows to someday complete the task she has given him. Realizing the lengths Naruto will go to for her, Sakura spends the two-and-a-half years dividing Part I and II to training so that she can help Naruto during his next attempt. As they search for Sasuke during Part II, Sakura learns of the various hardships Naruto faces: the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox and Akatsuki. Saddened by the impact both forces have had on his life, Sakura becomes protective of Naruto and tries to do whatever she can to help him overcome these obstacles.</p>
<p>Within Sakura resides &#8220;Inner Sakura,&#8221; a manifestation of her inner emotions. In addition to comic relief, Inner Sakura represents Sakura&#8217;s actual opinion on things when she outwardly displays something opposite. Inner Sakura&#8217;s appearances are typically marked by an exclamation of <em>&#8220;Shānnarō&#8221;</em> <span style="font-weight:normal;">(<span lang="ja">しゃーんなろー</span><span> </span>)</span>. The phrase has no literal meaning, but is usually translated as &#8220;hell yeah,&#8221; &#8220;hell no,&#8221; or &#8220;damn it&#8221; depending on the situation. Viz media replaces it with the word &#8220;Cha!&#8221; in the English versions of <em>Naruto</em>. Although she appears quite frequently at the start of the series, Inner Sakura all but disappears midway through Part I, her only other appearance being at the start of Part II. Sakura, likewise, now performs the emotional outbursts she once relied on Inner Sakura for, much to the dismay of those who are around her at the time.</p>
<h3><span>Abilities</span></h3>

<div style="width:182px;"><img class="alignleft" style="margin-right:6px;" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/59/SakuraHealing.jpg/180px-SakuraHealing.jpg" alt="" width="180" height="135" /></div>
</div>
<p>For the duration of Part I, Sakura&#8217;s abilities go largely unseen and undeveloped. While she is shown to be very proficient with basic ninja abilities during the few battles she participates in, Sakura lacks any unique traits that set her apart from the rest of Team 7. Her teacher, Kakashi Hatake, notes that Sakura has an excellent control over her chakra early in Part I, but it is not until Part II that she is taught to use this ability to her advantage.</p>
<p>After training under Tsunade for two-and-a-half years, Sakura acquires two abilities that rely directly on her precise chakra control. The first and most common of these two is her ability to heal wounds, giving her the position as her team&#8217;s medical ninja. Due to the speed and proficiency with which she can heal others, many characters have noted Sakura to be more talented than most medical ninja with far more experience. Because a ninja team relies on its medical ninja to survive, Sakura must both avoid opponents and keep them at bay during battle. This is accomplished through Sakura&#8217;s second ability: her superhuman strength. By building up chakra in her fists and releasing it on contact with a target, Sakura can reduce most obstacles to rubble with great ease.</p>
<p><a id="Plot_overview" name="Plot_overview"></a></p>
<h2><span>Plot overview</span></h2>
<p>Sakura accompanies the rest of Team 7 during all of its early missions, though she does little to contribute to the battles that take place. Instead, Sakura sits on the sidelines, content in allowing her teammates to protect her and defeat their opponents. During the Chunin Exams, when the rest of Team 7 is left in need of her protection, Sakura realizes that relying on others to fight her battles has been unwise. She resolves to better her ninja abilities from that point further, and throughout the rest of the series takes a more active role in Team 7&#8217;s battles. After Sasuke&#8217;s defection from Konoha at the end of Part I, Naruto&#8217;s failure to bring him back, and Sakura&#8217;s inability to help either of them, she becomes Tsunade&#8217;s apprentice so that she can do more for her teammates in the future.</p>
<p>Sakura takes a more active role in Part II, as is first seen in her defeat of Akatsuki member Sasori. As a result of her victory, Sakura is given the chance to learn of Sasuke&#8217;s whereabouts. Naruto, Sakura, and the new members of Team 7 use this intelligence to track Sasuke down, but they are once again unable to prevent him from escaping. While disappointed in their failure, Team 7 tries once again to find Sasuke, though after almost apprehending him they lose his trail and are forced to return home.</p>

<p>Sasuke&#8217;s early childhood, as told over the course of <em>Naruto</em> manga volume twenty-five, was spent living in the shadow of his older brother, Itachi Uchiha, a natural prodigy of the Uchiha clan. In an effort to win some recognition for himself, Sasuke trained diligently to win some of his parents&#8217; attention, though he was never able to surpass the milestones set in place by his brother, who would be the only one to acknowledge Sasuke&#8217;s accomplishments. In time, Itachi began to distance himself from the clan and fell out of his family&#8217;s confidence, which consequently began to look to Sasuke as the new future for the clan.</p>
<p>Soon after Sasuke started to be accepted into his family, he returned home one day to find the streets littered with the corpses of the Uchiha clan. Upon rushing home, Sasuke found Itachi standing over his parents&#8217;s corpses. As Sasuke tried to flee, <span id="more-52"></span>Itachi went on to explain that he had never loved his little brother. Claiming that Sasuke was not worth killing, Itachi encouraged him to get stronger by living a life of hate and anger towards him, with his sole purpose being to avenge the clan. Itachi left, and in the absence of a loving family Sasuke agreed to do as instructed, dedicating his life to killing Itachi. Years later, in Part II of the series, Sasuke is shown to have some doubts about the events of that night. It is not until after Itachi&#8217;s death that he learns the truth surrounding the massacre of the Uchiha: that it was all done on command by the village.</p>
<h3><span>Personality</span></h3>
<div>
<div style="width:159px;"><img class="alignleft" style="margin-right:6px;" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7f/PartII_Sasuke.png" alt="" width="157" height="300" /></div>
</div>
<p>When first introduced during his assignment to Team 7, Sasuke displays a great indifference to his teammates. Feeling that his abilities are far superior to their own, he is unwilling to cooperate with Naruto Uzumaki or Sakura Haruno, as doing so would do nothing to help him kill Itachi. These perceptions are quickly proven wrong, for despite their failings, Sakura is an excellent source of information; while competition with Naruto acts as an effective way to get stronger. While he retains a confidence in himself throughout the series, Sasuke increasingly relies on his friends over the course of Part I. As he starts to get close to others he also begins to risk his own life to save them, even though his death would leave him unable to fulfill his goal of vengeance upon Itachi.</p>
<p>Although Sasuke becomes content with a life of happiness in Konohagakure, he never allows his ambition to gain power to leave his thoughts. During his Part I battles with characters such as Haku and Gaara, Sasuke tests his abilities against those of progressively stronger ninja, in the process discovering the weakpoints he needs to overcome. While initially complacent with his development, Naruto quickly starts to grow stronger at a faster rate. This, coupled with his quick defeat by Itachi during a brief return to Konoha, leads Sasuke to believe that his growth is slowing. In an attempt to reassess his strength, he begins to treat his friends as opponents so as to test his abilities against their own.</p>
<p>Dissatisfied with his progress in Konoha and believing Orochimaru holds the keys to getting strong enough to kill Itachi, Sasuke defects from Konoha at the end of Part I. Naruto attempts to stop him, but Sasuke, believing the death of Naruto, his closest friend, will give him the power he desires (as he was told by Itachi), tries to kill him instead. He is ultimately unable to follow through with this idea, because he felt that is what Itachi would have wanted him to do, and instead continues on to Orochimaru. In the two-and-a-half years he spends with Orochimaru, Sasuke&#8217;s goal to kill Itachi takes precedence above all else; he even claims he is willing to give his body to Orochimaru if it means killing Itachi, but later turns on Orochimaru after reaching the conclusion that he can learn nothing else of value. After achieving his goal of bringing about Itachi&#8217;s death, in the process learning how his brother was manipulated by Konoha&#8217;s higher ups, Sasuke abandons all of his hate for Itachi and resolves to destroy Konoha for both of their sakes.</p>
<h3><span>Abilities</span></h3>
<div>
<div style="width:182px;"><img class="alignleft" style="margin-right:6px;" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/73/Cursed_Chidori.jpg/180px-Cursed_Chidori.jpg" alt="" width="180" height="139" /></div>
</div>
<p>Sasuke has always been able to grasp most ninja abilities with ease. When <em>Naruto</em> begins Sasuke is highly proficient with the Uchiha clan&#8217;s signature fire-breathing and weapon-based techniques, talents he continues to hone throughout the series. Of the abilities gained through his Uchiha lineage, Sasuke most commonly uses the Sharingan, an ability manifested through the eyes, that grants him a variety of advantages. Sasuke&#8217;s Sharingan develops for the duration of Part I, first only allowing him to track fast-moving objects and culminating with his ability to predict the movements of others. In Part II he starts to use his Sharingan to cast illusions, allowing him to manipulate and confuse others. Sasuke&#8217;s Sharingan reaches its peak after Itachi&#8217;s death; through the death of the person closest to him, Sasuke awakens his own Mangekyo Sharingan,<span>[</span>33<span>]</span> and gained the power to use his own Amaterasu fire technique as well as the ability to dispel it.</p>
<p>Orochimaru&#8217;s influence is also a recurring element of Sasuke&#8217;s abilities. During their first encounter in Part I, Sasuke is branded with a cursed seal, which grants him a brief surge in strength and speed when active. Sasuke&#8217;s various uses of the seal cause him to crave more of its power as he enters to a second level amplifying the effect and drastically changing his appearance. Itachi removes Orochimaru and the cursed seal from Sasuke&#8217;s body during their final battle. When Sasuke begins to train under Orochimaru, his physical abilities are greatly enhanced and he learns how to summon snakes so as to help him in battle. In addition to the techniques taught to him, Sasuke gains access to some of Orochimaru&#8217;s more common abilities during the period he absorbs him into his body; Sasuke is able to recover from injuries in short periods of time and can regurgitate new bodies for himself.</p>
<p>Prior to Sasuke&#8217;s defection, his teacher, Kakashi Hatake teaches him how to use the Chidori, a collection of lightning-based chakra in his hand that serves as a rapid thrusting attack that severely damages any target. While Sasuke is able to use the Chidori twice per day during Part I, his usage of the attack in Part II is unknown. Instead, Sasuke employs variants of the technique, using the fundamentals behind the Chidori to create a number of new abilities. Sasuke&#8217;s first display of such an ability involves emitting electricity from his body as a shield and then sending it along the blade of his chokutō to increase its cutting potential. He later proves able to mold electricity into more solid forms such as extendable swords, and even harnesses natural lightning to use it as an attack named Kirin <span style="font-weight:normal;">(<span lang="ja">麒麟</span><span style="display:none;">,</span> <em>Qilin</em>)</span>.</p>
<h2><span>Plot overview</span></h2>
<p>For the first half of Part I, Sasuke accompanies Team 7 in its various endeavors and training sessions. After his encounter with Orochimaru, who begins to manipulate Sasuke into his custody, Sasuke starts to act independently of Naruto and Sakura, pursuing his own opponents and being the only one to train with Kakashi. After Itachi&#8217;s brief return to Konoha and his simultaneous defeat by him, Sasuke becomes dissatisfied with what he has learned as a member of Team 7. Believing Orochimaru will be able to give him the strength needed to kill Itachi, Sasuke goes to him, severing his ties with Konoha in the process. Naruto follows him in an effort to stop him, and the two do battle. Though he tries to kill Naruto, Sasuke ultimately cannot bring himself to do so, and instead continues on to Orochimaru&#8217;s hideout, ready to gain strength at any cost.</p>
<p>After two-and-a-half years Sasuke, convinced that he has learned all he can from his new master, turns against a weakened Orochimaru before the latter can steal his body. Though Orochimaru attempts to force a body switch, Sasuke is able to reverse the process, absorbing Orochimaru and allowing him to put his plans of finding Itachi into motion. Sasuke forms &#8220;Hebi&#8221;, a team of individuals assembled to aid him in finding Itachi. Once they are able to track Itachi down, Sasuke leaves his team behind and goes to kill his brother. When Itachi dies after a prolonged battle, Sasuke is collected by Madara Uchiha. Madara tells Sasuke that Itachi killed the Uchiha under the orders of Konoha, spared Sasuke out of love, and subsequently allowed himself to be killed. Saddened with the revelation that his long-hated brother did everything for him, Sasuke unlocks his Mangekyo Sharingan and reunites with the members of Hebi, renaming them &#8220;Taka&#8221; with the intention of destroying Konoha. In the meantime, Sasuke agrees to have Taka work with the Akatsuki by capturing the eight-tailed beast, who later manages to escape. After recovering, Sasuke and Taka head to Konoha, only to learn that the village has been destroyed by Pain. Sasuke then takes his team to kill Danzo, the new Hokage and the man who wronged his brother.</p>

<p>Shortly after Naruto was born, his father, the Fourth Hokage,<span></span> sealed the dangerous Nine-Tailed Demon Fox within Naruto&#8217;s body at the cost of his own life, leaving Naruto without a family.<span></span> As a result of him being the demon fox&#8217;s host, the villagers of Konoha hold a strong animosity for Naruto. Thus, he never has a source of love or attention during his early childhood.<span></span> Desiring what he lacks in his early life, Naruto dreams of becoming Hokage, the village&#8217;s leader, hoping that it will bring him the villagers&#8217; recognition and respect.<span></span><span> </span> To assist him in gaining this title, Naruto possesses a fierce determination, always confident he can complete a given task with relative ease.<span></span> Although he does not always complete his tasks, Naruto&#8217;s efforts prove successful as the series progresses; many characters reach the conclusion that Naruto will someday be an excellent Hokage.<span id="more-48"></span><span></span> Since his childhood, Naruto has commonly made jokes to attract attention. He sometimes goes to the point of transforming into a naked woman to ridicule whoever may be bothering him. This even causes his pupil, Konohamaru Sarutobi, to emulate his techniques and jokes.<span></span></p>
<p>Occasionally, Naruto&#8217;s determination results in those around him adopting some of his traits, such that in Part II his teacher, Kakashi Hatake, notes this to be Naruto&#8217;s unique power.<span></span> In the aftermath of fighting Naruto, Gaara discovers that true strength is found in fighting for one&#8217;s friends, not for oneself.<span></span> These character metamorphoses serve as the moral for the arcs they take place in, and subsequently become the creed for the particular character&#8217;s life.<span></span> After Jiraiya&#8217;s death, Naruto becomes determinated to kill Pain, Jiraiya&#8217;s murderer. However, he later decides not to kill Pain and that he will break the hatred&#8217;s cycle as Jiraiya wanted.</p>
<p>Through his ability to change others, Naruto gains the friends he lacks during his childhood. Among the many friendships he forms, none are more prominent in the series than those he has with his two teammates: Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. With Sasuke, Naruto shares a highly competitive relationship which he likens to brotherhood. Though Sasuke betrays Naruto and the rest of Konoha at the end of Part I, Naruto maintains his attachment to Sasuke, readily lashing out at anyone who speaks poorly of him.<span></span> Naruto possesses a deep dedication to Sakura, rooted in the crush he has had on her for years. Naruto&#8217;s commitment to Sakura is so strong that he will do anything to make her happy, vowing to someday return Sasuke to Konoha for her sake.</p>

<p>Because of the demon fox sealed within him, Naruto has access to its great reserves of chakra, a form of energy which allows ninja to perform supernatural feats. This surplus of chakra allows him to perform ninja abilities that someone of his age would ordinarily be incapable of using. Though portions of the fox&#8217;s chakra constantly mix with Naruto&#8217;s own,<span></span> Naruto can forcibly draw upon its reserves by either submitting to rage<span></span> or by directly asking the fox for a donation of its strength.<span></span> Once the demon fox chakra releases, a fox-shaped shroud envelops Naruto, with the number of tails, ranging from one to nine, indicating its current state of release. While each tail drastically increases his fighting strength, Naruto begins to lose his rationality as more tails appear, completely losing himself once the fourth tail appears. Because the demon fox&#8217;s power can quickly become a danger to those he cares for, Naruto attempts to limit his reliance on and usage of the power.<span></span></p>
<p>Naruto takes advantage of his expanded chakra reserves throughout the series. His first and most recurring example of this is the Shadow Clone Technique, which creates any number of physical copies of the user, but requires large amounts of chakra.<span></span> Though most ninjas can create only a few shadow clones, Naruto&#8217;s vast chakra allows him to create hundreds of clones at once without worrying about fatigue. He finds a number of uses for these clones, among them overwhelming opponents, scouting large areas, and training in a short period of time.<span></span> His ability to summon toads to aid him in battle relies on the fox&#8217;s chakra, since he can only summon larger toads with the fox&#8217;s help.<span></span> He also learns senjutsu, a power-enhancing ability derived from frogs and involving the gathering of natural energy.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naruto_Uzumaki#cite_note-38"><span></span></a></p>

One day Goku meets a girl named Bulma and together they go on a quest to retrieve the seven Dragon Balls, mythical objects that can summon a dragon who will grant any wish. Along the way, they meet and befriend a plethora of martial artists. They also undergo rigorous training regimes and educational programs in order to fight in the World Martial Arts Tournament, a tournament in which the most powerful fighters in the world compete. Outside the tournaments, Goku faces diverse villains such as Emperor Pilaf, the Red Ribbon Army, a demon known as Piccolo Daimao and his offspring. As a young adult, Goku meets his older brother, Raditz, who tells him that they come from a race of extraterrestrials called Saiyans. <span id="more-35"></span>The Saiyans had sent Goku to Earth to destroy it, but his ship crashes upon arrival. Goku fell into a deep ravine and lost all memory of his mission. Goku refuses to help Raditz continue the mission, after which he begins to encounter others who want to battle him, such as the Saiyan prince Vegeta. He also encounters Frieza, who is considered to be one of the strongest beings in the universe, after which Goku begins training his first child, Son Gohan, to be his successor. Years later, a group of soldiers from the Red Ribbon army known as androids appear to kill Goku. Another android, Cell, absorbs Androids #17 and #18 from the Red Ribbon army to increase his power, then fights Goku and Gohan, resulting in the former&#8217;s death. Goku decides to stay dead for seven years to train in the Other World. When he returns, he is drawn into a battle for the universe against an extraterrestrial named Majin Buu. Joined by Vegeta and Gohan, the evil half of Buu is destroyed and the Good Buu (Mr. Buu) settles down with them. Ten years later at a martial arts tournament, Goku meets evil Buu&#8217;s human reincarnation, Uub. At the end of the series, Goku takes Uub away on a journey to train him as another successor.</p>

Luffy, inspired by his childhood hero &#8220;Red-Haired&#8221; Shanks, sets out on a journey to find One Piece, the legendary treasure of the King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger. To accomplish this, he must reach the end of the most deadly and dangerous ocean: The Grand Line.</p>
<p>Luffy captains the Straw Hat Pirates first through the sea of East Blue and then through the Grand Line. He follows the path of the deceased King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger, from island to island on his way to the great treasure One Piece. On his way his crew grows to have a swordsman, a navigator, a sniper, a cook, a doctor, an archaeologist, a shipwright, and a musician.</p>
<p>During the course of the story, the crew contend with both other less moral pirate crews and the Navy. The latter are the subordinates of the World Government, who apparently seek justice by ending the Golden Age of Pirates. Many background story elements involve the delicate balance of power between the World Government and the world&#8217;s most powerful pirate crews.</p>
